Diffusion-Alloyed Steel Metal Parts
Diffusion-alloyed PM steels are used in many applications and industries for the production of high performance components requiring strength, wear resistance and durability.
These materials are made from the diffusion of alloying elements such as nickel, copper and molybdenum, into the base steel powder during the sintering process. Graphite powder is admixed with the diffusion alloyed powder to provide the necessary level of carbon in the finished material.
What is Diffusion Alloyed Steel?
Diffusion alloyed steel powder metal parts are created by thermally bonding the alloying elements to the individual particles of the base iron or steel. Similar to nickel and pre-alloyed steel grades, diffusion-alloyed steels are useful in medium to high-density applications and can achieve densities above 7.0 g/cm3. Diffusion-alloyed steels used in high strength applications and may be heat-treated to increase wear resistance. This process, known as diffusion alloying, results in a seamless integration of alloying components throughout the material.

Key Advantages of Diffusion Alloyed Steel
Thermal Bonding : The diffusion process when creating these powders ensures a strong thermal bond between the alloying elements and the base material. This results in a seamless integration of elements that enhances the overall structural integrity and performance of the steel powder metal parts.
Versatility in Applications: Similar to nickel and pre-alloyed steel grades, diffusion-alloyed steel powders are versatile and well-suited for components in applications requiring robust and durable parts.
Impressive Density: With diffusion-alloyed steels, part densities above 7.0 g/cm3 can be achieved, providing materials that meet exacting requirements. This high density contributes to the strength and resilience of the parts, making them ideal for demanding applications.
Heat-Treatable for Enhanced Wear Resistance: Diffusion-alloyed steel powders are designed to be heat-treated,providing flexibility to enhance wear resistance as needed. This feature allows for the tailoring of the material properties to specific applications, ensuring optimal performance under various conditions.
The versatility of Diffusion Alloyed Steel componente makes it a suitable option for a wide range of applications, including:
- Automotive Components: From gears to transmission parts, the material’s strength and wear resistance contribute to a component's improved performance and longevity.
- Consumer Goods: Some sporting equipment such as bicycle gears or golf club heads benefit with improved performance. Hand tools, such as wrenches and pliers benefit from the superior harness and wear resistance from diffusion-alloyed steel materials. Firearm components requiring strength and durability are often manufactured using diffusion-alloyed steel materials.
- Industrial Machinery: In heavy industrial machinery, including gears, sprockets and bearings, these materials excel in providing the strength and durability required for optimal performance of the finished part. Hydraulic and valve components are particularly good candidates for diffusion-alloyed steel components.
