Powdered Metal Soft Magnetic Alloys 2.0 –Development of a Commercial grade electromagnetic Clutch
Atlas produces a soft magnetic component for an electromagnetic clutch in a retail system. The commercial version of the same system requires better magnetic performance from the soft magnetic component. At the time, the commercial component was machined from 1215 steel, a costly manufacturing method.
Replace the 1215 steel component with a powder metal equivalent. This challenge would require re-thinking the approach to producing the soft magnetic component. The PM component in the retail system simply did not have sufficient magnetic performance to be used in the commercial application.
Atlas Pressed Metals Innovation Team put their experience and knowledge to work. With a deep understanding of how the manufacturing process affects magnetic response, Atlas designed a process to provide improved magnetic properties. Using our innovative processing technique, the Atlas Pressed Metals Innovation Team achieved 15% higher magnetic performance in the component.
The result was a component that utilized existing materials and tooling, AND met the magnetic requirement for a commercial grade clutch.
